Great piece, and you're right to call out the berlknied acolytes who hold Ballard up as a sage while conveniently ignoring his clunkering prose and regurgitated plots. I also agree that his short stories represent some of his most interesting work, particularly The Atrocity Exhibition. Novel-wise, I think he's at his best in Concrete Island and High Rise.
